If You Love Books – The Marina Vallarta Living Room Bookstore & Cafe

When it came time to ship our stuff from the United States to our new home in Mexico, many of our most treasured possessions didn’t make the cut. Not my mom’s tea set, or many of my kitchen tools, not the chicken shaped porcelain roasting dish (sniff), and only one piece of furniture made the cut. What did we bring? Books. A shit ton of books!

We are avid readers (and writers) so I guess it makes sense this is what we would prioritize for international shipping. In fact, our first order of business once we took possession of our new condo was to have a wall of bookshelves installed to welcome said library. That’s how much we love our books.

Imagine our delight when we discovered that Puerto Vallarta has a number of shops selling both Spanish and English language books (we are learning Spanish, but its gonna take a minute). Eureka!

The Living Room Bookstore and Cafe

The Living Room Bookstore and Cafe was the first local bookstore we visited and we were immediately charmed. It’s a narrow space in the heart of the Marina district (they have a second location in 5 de Diciembre neighborhood), with a small cafe onsite, tables inside as well as in the shade out front.

We were warmly welcomed and given an overview of the store. Most of the books are secondhand, but there are a few new as well. The selection is fairly broad, though not deep, given the limitations of the space. However, we found it to be well organized for a pleasant browsing experience and all volumes seem to be in very good condition (not always the case in secondhand bookstores).

There are also lots of cute little artsy things for sale strewn throughout the shop. Everywhere you turn there are fun things to look at. A cozy spot to spend a couple of hours, if you enjoy basking in the presence of books (like we do).
